History of the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility

The St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility and staff are currently in the process of the final stages of a transition from a 100+ year old Correctional Facility to a modern new Facility on the south side of the Village of Canton. Planning for this facility started in early 2003. The new facility has been completed through the actual construction phase and now is being prepared for occupancy by staff and inmates with final details, training and transition issues being met. Occupancy of this 164 bed facility is expected in the first quarter of 2009 and will occur upon NYS Commission of Corrections approval. The Jail Transition Team (led by Assistant Jail Administrator Daniel Dominie) has worked in conjunction the Jail Project Committee (led by Legislator Sally Brothers), Community Jail Advisory Committee (led by Lowell Kelsey) and other agencies throughout this project. The new Correctional Facility was designed by SMRT Architects out of Portland, Maine, Construction Mangers are Pike Company out of Rochester, NY and physical construction was completed by 11 prime contractors and numerous other sub-contractors. Construction has arrived at completion stage on time and within budget. A Project Labor Agreement was in place throughout this construction project.

The new Correctional Facility will be staffed by 58 sworn full-time Correctional Staff and 10 sworn part-time Correctional Staff. It will also employee 6 civilian staff. Nursing and other health related staffing is provided by St. Lawrence County Public Health and St. Lawrence County Community Services. All occupancy, training and the majority of day-to-day policy and procedural aspects of a County Correctional Facility are mandated by NYS through the Commission of Corrections. The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and County Government as whole have had an excellent working relationship with the Commission throughout this project. The thousands of hours of work and planning by hundreds of people from the many involved Governmental, Construction and other agencies has all came to fruition and we look forward to a Grand Opening / Ribbon Cutting ceremony on Monday, January 26th  at 3:00 P.M.
